Strike Action Looms for easyJet Crew at Alicante Airport

Industrial dispute to hit Spanish bases in late June

Passengers flying via Alicante Airport with easyJet later this month may face disruption due to planned strike action by the airline’s Spanish cabin crew. The strikes are scheduled for the 25th, 26th and 27th of June and are being organised by the USO union, which represents crew members based in Spain.

The industrial action involves staff from four key bases, Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca, with over 650 employees expected to participate. The dispute centres on longstanding concerns over wage inequality and employment conditions.

Why are crew members striking?

At the heart of the conflict is a demand for equal treatment. According to the USO union, easyJet cabin crew in Spain are paid significantly less than their colleagues at other European bases. The union argues that the cost of living in Spain has increased to levels comparable with other European countries, but staff pay has not kept pace.

Negotiations over a new collective agreement have reached an impasse, with no progress made on closing the salary gap. A recent mediation attempt by Spain’s arbitration body, SIMA, failed to produce an agreement, prompting the union to confirm the strike dates.

Will flights from Alicante be cancelled?

Despite the looming strike, easyJet has stated its intention to maintain a full flight schedule. The airline is making preparations to keep services running normally, including those to and from Alicante. It has also reminded customers that, under Spanish law, a minimum level of service must be provided during industrial action, helping to avoid large-scale flight cancellations.

A spokesperson for easyJet stressed that the airline operates in eight different countries, with staff employed under local contracts based on national employment laws. They emphasised that the company is doing all it can to protect passengers from disruption.

Preparing for possible delays

While easyJet plans to operate as usual, passengers travelling through Alicante during the affected dates are advised to plan ahead. Checking flight status regularly, arriving at the airport with extra time to spare, and staying updated via the airline’s app or website are all sensible precautions.

It’s also worth noting that delays could still occur even if cancellations are avoided, particularly if staffing levels are stretched. If your travel dates fall within the strike period, flexible arrangements and a little extra patience may help smooth the experience.
