Travel Update: Strong Winds and Flight Disruptions at Alicante-Elche Airport

Travel Update: Strong Winds and Flight Disruptions at Alicante-Elche Airport

Saturday, February 14th, 2026

The Costa Blanca is currently on high alert as Storm Oriana sweeps across the region, bringing severe weather conditions that are impacting travel by air, rail, and road. With an amber weather warning in place, passengers using Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport are advised to stay informed and prepare for potential disruptions.

Amber Weather Warnings Issued

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated an amber alert for the entire province of Alicante. Forecasters are predicting exceptionally strong north-westerly winds, with gusts expected to exceed 90 km/h. In more exposed areas and higher altitudes, these could reach hurricane-force speeds of up to 150 km/h.

The most volatile period is expected to be between midday and the early evening on Saturday. During these hours, the wind is anticipated to be at its most intense, creating challenging conditions for both aviation and ground transport.

Impact on Flights at Alicante-Elche Airport

As a result of the turbulent conditions, Alicante-Elche Airport is currently experiencing a knock-on effect on its flight schedule. While the airport remains operational, both arrivals and departures are seeing delays.

Currently, departing flights are the most affected. Passengers should be prepared for delays ranging from a few minutes to approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is recommended that travellers check the live status of their flight with their airline before heading to the terminal.

Rail and Road Disruptions

The severe weather is not limited to the skies. The train operator Renfe has announced significant cancellations on the Mediterranean Corridor. Due to a red alert (the highest level) in neighbouring Castellón, rail services between Alicante, Valencia, and Barcelona have been suspended. This includes several Euromed and Intercity services.

For those planning to reach the airport by car, AENA and local emergency services have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution. High winds can make driving high-sided vehicles particularly hazardous, and debris on the roads is a possibility.

Advice for Passengers

If you are scheduled to fly today, please keep the following in mind:

  • Check with your airline: Monitor your email and the airline’s app for real-time updates on your flight status.
  • Allow extra travel time: Road conditions may be difficult, and public transport schedules may be altered.
  • Safety first: Local authorities have already cancelled several public events, including Carnival festivities, due to the risk of falling objects or structural damage in the high winds.

Stay safe and plan ahead to minimise the impact on your journey.
